Matvienko resigns after election victory of 97 percent
St Petersburg. The current Governor for St Petersburg, Valentina Matvienko resigns today after she successfully was elected in two city districts. Matvienko will continue her career in Moscow.

As a precaution, Valentina Matvienko was a candidate for two city districts. In both districts, however, she received amazing results at the election, especially organized for her, for the city council.

In the election district of “Red River”, the Governor reached 97.29 percent, approximately 13,000 registered votes, with a turnout of 29.91 percent. In the urban district “Petrovsky” she received 95 percent, arount 7,500 votes, with a turnout of 36.5 percent.

Extravagant folk festivals with free cultural activities were organized to make the elections more attractive. Matvienko had promised to resign as Governor of St Petersburg if she would not be elected for at least one of the two districts.

After the election victory she is now able to move into the city parliament and through the majority fraction of the Kremlin party “United Russia” to Moscow as a minister in the Federation Council.

In the Federation Council, the second house, Matvienko could soon be elected Chairman and with this become number three at the Russian Head of State.
