Alcohol consumption per head: Russians are not world champions
Moscow. Contrary to popular belief, Russians are not the heaviest drinkers in the world, this medal goes to Moldova. Russia is only in fourth place for alcohol consumption in the WHO rating.

The per head consumption in Moldova is 18.22 liters of pure alcohol annually, three times more than the global average. This small and poor country, known for its wine cellars and brandy distilleries of dubious reputation, has promoted itself to the top of the list of alcohol consumption in the world.

The top ranks of the heaviest drinking nations according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) belongs without doubt to Eastern Europe: in second place is the Czech Republic with 16.45 liters and Hungary with 16.27 liters per head.

Only Andorra can measure up with the East Europeans In Russia the average consumption of alcohol is 15.76 liters per person aged 15 and above, Ukraine is next with 15.6 liters and Estonia with 15.57 liters.

The only West European country among the top ten of highest drinking nations is Andorra which lies on seventh place, followed by Romania, Slovenia and Belarus.

One in five deaths is due to alcohol abuse The report also said that globally, 6 percent of all male deaths are related to alcohol, compared to 1 percent of female deaths.

In the heavy drinking CIS countries 'Vodka and Co.' kill one fifth of the population.
