At the end of the 19th century, Tsar Nicholas II ordered a representative building to be built on Red Square to house a department store for merchants’ wares. Right from its opening in 1893 onwards, it was regarded as an architectural marvel that captured the spirit of Russia’s rise.

The huge Luzhniki (former Lenin) stadium is today the home of Spartak Moscow, Russia’s soccer champions for a record number of times. It stands amid a number of sports locations strung along a bend in the Moskva. Built in 1955, the whole ensemble was renovated for the XXII. Olympic Games in 1980.

Of all Stalin’s pompous palaces, Moscow’s Lomonossov University (MGU) in the southwest of the capital is the most massive. The university can even be seen from Sheremtevo airport. The 250m-high main corpus today houses some faculties, the university administration and accommodation for students and faculty.
